Words Per Minute (WPM) — Typing Test Scores Explained

WPM is the standard measure of typing speed. Understanding how it is calculated helps you compare scores fairly and set improvement goals on TypingBit and other typing test platforms.

How WPM is calculated

Most typing tests define one "word" as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. Formula: (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. If you type 300 characters in 1 minute, your WPM is 60.

Accuracy is separate. A high WPM with many errors is less valuable than a moderate WPM with 98%+ accuracy for real work.

What is a good WPM score?

Beginner: 20–35 WPM. Intermediate: 40–60 WPM. Advanced: 65–85 WPM. Professional typists and court reporters often exceed 90 WPM.

Tamil typing practice scores may be lower initially when learning Tamil99 layout — focus on correct key mapping before chasing speed.
